Cultivating a morning routine in times of uncertainty.

Coach Kelsie shares 4 easy steps you can take to cultivate the comfort of a morning routine when so much right now is uncertain. AND she shares one of her fave breakfast smoothie recipes!

Typically, humans are creatures of habit; I know I am! We snooze our alarm a couple of times, finally peel our eyes open just enough to scroll through Instagram. Finally, pull ourselves out of bed and shuffle to the kitchen to start our coffee. Scroll some more while we wait for the liquid gold to percolate. Waste 45 minutes on social media, then we decide we should probably get ready for work. Now we’re rushed because that darn social media sucked us in again. THEN (here’s the good part of the story!) all of a sudden, our life gets turned upside down. No school for the kiddos- you are now the teachers. Your husband is now working from home- just added one more kid to the mix. AND, no leaving the house except for essentials. HA! WHATTTT? WHYYYY? Obviously, to stay healthy BUT now our sanity is on the line, and things don’t seem to be changing anytime soon. Thankfully, with these 4 changes, we can take control of our day instead of our day taking control of us.

1. STOP SCROLLING

Nobody is exempt from this! I fall victim TOO much, I know we all do. But really, maybe that’s why we believe our life is so “mundane.” We constantly have this “perfect” picture in our face thanks to social media. We know it’s not reality, but that picture looks soooo pretty. I am sure technology won’t be leaving our life anytime soon and that’s ok. But, let’s do our mental health, eye health (LOL), and emotional health a favor and put the social media down for at LEAST the first hour we are awake, unless you’re jumping on Zoom for one of our live virtual #fgfathome classes of course 😉. Give yourself some time to wake up, enjoy the little things the morning has to offer before we are immersed in the world wide web!

2. FIND “YOU” TIME

When I was younger, I had a summer job as a shaved ice maker, popcorn popper, and lemonade maker. No joke! The HUGE cups of shaved ice people walked around with at Hoopfest, that was me! The GIANT bags of popcorn you bought at the 4th of July festival in CDA City Park, also me! Those were some longgggg summer days and nothing was getting me out of bed until the very last minute. A gal I worked with once told me that she would wake up at 4:30am before work because that was the only way she could have some peace and quiet. I remember thinking she was C R A Z Y. Like, why on God’s green earth would she wake up that early?!?! Well, because kids. HA! Now I get it! Sometimes, especially now, that may be the only time you have for yourself! And that my friends, as many of you know, is GOLD! Whether it’s taking 30 minutes to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee and a book, 20 minutes of a relaxing bath or shower, or a 5-minute cold plunge, my personal fave, 😊 I really encourage you to carve out just a few minutes of “you” time. They say, “you can’t give from an empty glass.” Which is more true now with all the additional demands on your time than ever before.

3. GET MOVING!

It’s no secret movement releases endorphins. Movement isn’t only good for your physical health but also your mental health. Hello Covid-19, thanks for knocking but you will NOT get the best of our mental health today! If you don’t have the time to do a full-blown workout, or if you’re just not feeling it, that’s ok! We don’t discriminate against movement; alllll movement is beneficial. Maybe at 5:30am your best movement is a few quick stretches and a neck roll or two, perhaps it’s a full-on Farmgirlfit workout, or maybe it’s a nice morning stroll. Whatever it is, honor that and allow that time for yourself.

4. EAT BREAKFAST

Doc said breakfast is the most important meal of the day! However, Bonbons and Lucky Charms probably aren’t going to do the trick. Opt for a more nutritious, filling breakfast. Smoothies are a personal fav of mine because I get a dose of veggies, protein, fiber, and healthy fats that will keep me full and satisfied. Used to feeling that mid-morning crash? Try having a breakfast that will keep your blood sugar balanced, feed your muscles the protein they need to repair, provide healthy fats that will feed your brain, and keep you full. Here is a quick smoothie recipe that I use to help kick start my mornings:

Choco-Berry Smoothie:

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbsp of cacao powder (blood sugar balancer)
  • 2 scoops of collagen (protein)
  • 2 tbsp almond butter (healthy fats)
  • 1/2 cup frozen berries (fiber)
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds (fiber)

Blend and enjoy 😊
