Stroke Awareness Month

Meet Alix and Miranda.  These two young women don’t know each other well, in fact they’ve never even met, but they do have some very interesting things in common. They are both 24 years old, have been active their whole lives and really, are pretty darn healthy.  They’re both quite social, staying connected to friends, family and community, and will always greet you with a bright, beautiful smile.  They are also both members of Farmgirlfit Spokane, and about 5 months ago, within days of each other, both suffered strokes.

We are pleased to share that both are recovering remarkably well.  In fact, you may have seen Alix back in the gym already, and Miranda will be soon too -- just that little hurdle of nursing school finals to get through!

Still, it seems so unlikely that within our seemingly small community of members, we would have not one but two healthy young women suffer strokes within days of each other. Turns out, strokes are much more common than you might think. According to the CDC, in the United States alone, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds!  And it is more common in women than men (approximately 55,000 more women than men each year will suffer a stroke), and it’s the 3rd leading cause of death in women.  With those kinds of statistics, we would like to do our part to help prevent and treat the incidence of stroke, particularly in this month (May) of Stroke Awareness.

Please join us on Saturday May 16th for a special “Wear Red” Grind at Farmgirlfit Spokane.  Both the 9:30 and 10:30 Grinds will be FREE CLASSES for current FGF members.  Following, Alix and Miranda will share their individual stories, as well as stroke awareness information: risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures, particularly as they pertain to women.

In the meantime, get to know a little more about each of these lovely young ladies here: Alix and Miranda
